Three cloud computing service models

Know about the cloud computing service delivery models.

Cloud computing, as an industry is growing fast; the industry revenue is projected to grow to more than USD 300 billion by the year 2021. That’s some spectacular rise for any industry in a short period in the recent past.

Cloud computing now delivering a variety of entrepreneur solutions particularly the software, storage, and computing requirements to the organizations over the internet. It is enabling the companies to think beyond the on-premises IT infrastructure, which is expensive and requires huge maintenance costs in the form of premises and personnel.

We have already discussed the basics of cloud computing like what is cloud computing and how does it work, etc. You can read the basics of cloud computing here

Cloud computing services are delivered to the organizations in different models, depending on the business requirements mainly. As organizations themselves fall in different categories when it comes to size and business model, instead of one-size-fits-all, cloud computing delivery models emerged accordingly. Cloud computing delivery can be broadly classified into 3 models. They are Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Under Software as a Service model, software and applications are provided over the internet by the software company. The applications are not installed on the user devices but located on the supplying software company. The user can access the software or application through the web or API and store, process the data as required.

User pays for subscription only need to not worry about anything else. Whether it is maintenance or upgrading, the vendor will take care of it all. Subscription prices are based on the number of users or the time used, or the data stored depending on the requirement as well as the service offerings. Most vendors provide on-demand scalability, often instantly, making it easy for the organization to scale the operations as and when needed without incurring any additional hardware or infrastructure costs.

SaaS is the most used cloud computing model with the sales amounting to more than a billion dollars a year as of now.

Platform as a Software (PaaS)

In the PaaS model, the users are provided with the cloud environment where they can design, manage, and deliver their own cloud-based applications. Apart from the storage and computing infrastructure, an environment with s pre-defined or built basic suit is provided where the companies can develop them further or customize it to suit their needs.

It is best to develop and host the application as all the required tools are provided with the cloud environment. It aids in the development of tools and applications without worrying about the infrastructure or hardware needed.

PaaS is the least used model when compared to the other two. But it is significant for small and medium enterprises that are on the path of expansion and need customized solutions.

Infrastructure as a Sources (IaaS)

In this cloud computing offering, the computing resources like networks, servers, and storage are provided to the enterprises on demand by the service providers. Using the infrastructure, organizations can develop their own platforms and applications within the provided infrastructure. Under this, only computing capabilities and support for the same are provided.

This is best for organizations with large-scale usage. Usually, in the subscription-based model, if the users are more the billing grow up substantially but with the IaaS, organizations can have access to far more resources and the control at competitive prices. Vendors provide a guaranteed amount of storage or computing resources that are scalable easily and on-demand with the supply of additional resources.

It is the fast-growing cloud-service model for now. Estimates suggest that IaaS grew by 40 percent nearly in the last few years.

Cloud computing is fast evolving with the time, there are many other means of delivering cloud solutions to enterprises are being invented to offer custom solutions so that enterprises manage themselves effectively. In the near future, we might see many new means of delivering enterprise solutions distinctly suited to each business model.
